SECAF Event Recap – Government Contracts: Opportunities and Obstacles
Why Complacency Can Mean Sudden Death and Harvesting Assets Is A Lifeline
February 20, 2014, McLean, VA – The Small and Emerging Contractors Advisory Forum (SECAF), the premier organization for the small and emerging government contractor, held its latest Educational Forum– Government Contracts: Opportunities and Obstacles– on February 11 at the Tower Club. Delivered by Jones Day partners Grant Willis and Andrew Sherman, the conversation focused on the rewards and risks associated with federal government contracting, practical considerations in dealing with federal agency customers, and current trends and issues.
“In this space, complacency is the kiss of death,” said Sherman. “Small and emerging contractors must continually evaluate their strategic plans and business models, especially in these volatile and unpredictable times.”
Grant and Sherman went on to discuss how the leaders of small and emerging growth contractors should develop strategies to manage and harvest their intangible assets in order to drive new revenue channels and business growth opportunities. This includes commercial and overseas markets where core competencies could and should be leveraged. It is also imperative that contractors take a hard look at the composition and effectiveness of their boards of directors and establish dynamic advisory boards to help identify new opportunities.
“All the information that Andrew and Grant shared was incredibly pertinent in the current marketplace,” stated Kwesi Rogers, President, Federal National Commercial Credit. "Today’s regulatory environment is demanding and as a result, government contractors are under constant pressure to prepare for DCAA audits, False Claim Acts actions bid protests and other regulatory requirements. I believe attendees developed a deeper understanding of the importance of assessing their internal controls and compliance systems to in addition to focusing on the other activities required to meet their corporate objectives.”
